Making and Preserving a Second Master
A common problem people have when using multiple masters in PPT 2002 or 2003 is that the extra masters they want just seem to disappear. The masters disappear if you delete all the slides that use that master and have not preserved (or pinned) the extra masters. Follow these steps and your masters will stay around.
- Create your second master
In your existing presentation...
- View--> Master--> Slide Master
- In the left column (the one with the slide miniatures), select a master.
- CTRL-C to copy the master, CTRL-V to paste the master
You now have two pairs of master slides.
- Adapt the second master
- Click the content master you just made. This will bring it up in the main pane.
- Select the text and make your formatting adjustment. Add any additional items you need to have on this master. Change the background if you need to.
- (If your masters still look fairly similar) Add a rectangle on the slide so that it is obvious which master is the one with small text.
If you need more than two pairs of masters, or more than two of either of the masters, repeat the create and adapt steps for each master.
- Preserve (or Pin) both masters so they do not get deleted
- Click any of the masters in the left column.
- CTRL-A to select all the masters in the left column.
- Right click and select "Preserve Master"
All four master slide miniatures should now have a thumbtack icon just to their left.
- Return to the slide view and apply your master
- Close the Master Slide View.
- Go to one on the slides you want to have the smaller text.
- Do a Format--> Slide Design. At the top of the list of slide designs is a category called "Used in This Presentation".
- Move your mouse so that the cursor is over the second master (the one with the box). A drop down arrow will appear to the master's right.
- Click the drop down arrow and select "Apply to selected slides".
Your current slide will get the new formatting.
- Remove the box from the master
When you have finished creating the slides for the presentation file, you will want to remove the extra box (if you used one) from the master slide. Here is how to do it:
- Save the presentation
- View--> Master--> Slide Master
- Click the miniature master in the left column that has the extra box.
- Close the Master View.
Your slides will no longer have the extra box. Save the presentation.
Need to use this set of templates over and over? Create a template from them
- With your presentation open, File--> Save as... and give the presentation a new name.
- Delete all the slides from the presentation.
- View the master slides (View--> Masters--> Slide Master).
- If you put a box on any of the masters earlier, put it back.
- Close the Master View.
- File--> Save as...
- Change the file type to "Template" (To see the file type options, click the arrow next to the file type box.)
The location on your hard drive where the file will be saved will change to your template area. - Change the name of the template if you wish.
- Click OK to save the template.
Now, when you open a new presentation, you can select this template and all your created masters will all ready be there for you to use.
